How does the sewer system work?

If you live in an urban or suburban area, your home is likely connected to a municipal sewer system. This vast network of underground pipes carries wastewater from homes and businesses to a centralized treatment facility often operated by the city or municipality.

In short, wastewater flows through your home’s plumbing then through the public sewer lines all the way to a wastewater treatment plant. The treatment plant filters and treats the water to remove contaminants before releasing it into rivers, lakes, or oceans.

The biggest perk of a sewer system is that the city manages every – and you’re just responsible for paying monthly sewer bills.

How does the septic system work?

If you live in a rural or off-grid area, then you’re more likely to have a septic system on the property. This is a self-contained waste management system located on your property. It handles all of the wastewater treatment on-site.

In a septic system, the waste and wastewater flows down the drains and into a septic tank buried underground. There, they form three natural layers: a bottom layer of solid waste, a middle layer of liquid effluent, and a top layer of grease and scum. The solid waste and scum are broken down by bacteria in the tank while the wastewater travels on to the drain field for further treatment.

Unlike sewer systems, septic systems require regular maintenance from the homeowner to keep everything running smoothly. Maintenance tasks include septic tank pumping and cleaning as well as annual inspections.

Which system is better for you?

There’s no clear “winner” when comparing sewer and septic systems; It really depends on where you live and your personal preferences. Sewer systems are hands-off and convenient while septic systems offer independence but require a bit more effort on the homeowner’s part.

Luckily, owners of septic systems won’t have to do the septic tank cleaning and maintenance on their own. Septic companies like Septic Blue can handle that work so you don’t have to get your hands dirty.
